Hardly art but exciting just the same. The 1991 Honda Civic DX I purchased in 1998 with 98,000 on the odometer reached 200,000 yesterday evening. The car has a lot more rust and many new parts but the engine still runs great and gets 42 mpg with the air conditioner off. I took the picture in the garage with the door closed. The window light was not sufficient to illuminate the 2 on the left hand side of the odometer so I held up a fluorescent shop light on the right side and diffused it with a thin piece of white fabric.

Jacob wanted to go on "vacation to the zoo with Dad". So we took a half day and went to the zoo. Jene', Josh and my younger brother met us there later. Josh and I took the camera along so we would have something fun to do.

The attempt for me was to view things in the artistic realm. The other option was to photograph the people of the zoo and forget the animals. I may have to return to that topic some day because there is lots of 'interesting' material on that subject.

Josh will have to post his stuff later. He took about 700 pictures. After the out takes editing he is down to 100. He is in the process of narrowing it down to his top 5 pics. He is actually starting to get an eye for it. I wish digital had been an option when I was learning. Would have saved me a lot on development costs.

Basics of Exposure

One advantage of using a SLR camera is the ability to control how the camera deals with scenes that have a wide contrast in lighting. Both of these pictures were taken at the same time. The top photo was taken using my standard camera settings of -2/3 of an f-stop (the Nikon sensors tend to overexpose). As you can see, the foreground is basically so dark you can't see any detail.

By adjusting the settings to +1 f-stop, the camera overexposed the scene, the foreground details are visible without losing too much detail in the well lit area of the scene. If you want to be able to control the exposure of your shots, a SLR camera is a must.

This photo was taken at at grandma's house during a family birthday party. I used a fixed focal length lens with a huge aperture, a slow shutter speed and a high ISO setting on the camera. The picture was taken using available light with the white balance set to auto. This allowed the warm color given off by incandescent lighting to be reflected in their faces. I focused on the younger boy and because of the wide aperture everything beyond him is out of focus. I love this lens because I can take pictures indoors without the need for a flash. A flash would have made this picture look flat and dull.

This photograph was taken by McKay from the back seat of the car while he was still strapped in to the booster seat. I was fueling the car after the family kite flying outing in the park. McKay opened the door and said I want to take a picture. He already had the camera in his hand so I reached in, adjusted the ISO to 1600 and clicked the knob to "P." I stood back up and he snapped the shot. He captured this image after sunset using available light (no flash). The image you see is how it came out of the camera. We don't own photoshop nor do we know how to use it. I like the deep blue of the sky and combination of lights and shadows on my face giving it definition. I also like the angle and how the gas pump dips down one way and the car door up the other way. The pump gives a sense of place and the jacket gives a sense of season. It takes the portait out of the studio and places it in real life.

Last night I pulled into the Best Buy parking lot 15 minutes before closing time. I was a little crooked in the parking stall so I pulled forward to the adjoining slot. To my left was a huge 4 wheel drive truck parked in the same fashion. I ran into the store, quickly made my purchase and while preparing to leave heard "blah blah blah Honda Civic," over the PA system. Not understanding what they said I assumed I had left my lights on. When I exited the store I saw my car pulled halfway out of the parking stall in the condition pictured above. To no one in particular I said, "What did they do to my car." One of the three store clerks who had stepped outside to witness the action said, "Is that your car?" When I responded in the affirmative he replied, "Some dude is looking for you." Two seconds later an ashen faced teenager stepped from the store and said, "Sorry about your car." He had pulled out of his parking stall, cut a little too hard to the right, hooked my car with his back tire and yanked it out of its spot. His truck was not damaged.

We just returned from our trip to Alaska. This is a waterfall called The Pitchfork, north of Skagway on the road to Whitehorse, Yukon. At 60 degrees north, fall arrives early. They say that Alaska has two seasons; winter and July.

For the monthly planners lunch, Sandy City provided a tour of the new Real Salt Lake Stadium. It doesn't open until October 9, but we got a early preview. This shot is from the northwest corner. Even if you're not a soccer fan (which I am) or a fan of public financing for sports venues (which I am not), this is a fantastic stadium and well worth a visit.

The end of a long road

I have been saving this picture to share tonight. My grandfather, Ed Hansen, passed away a little before 6:00 this evening. He was 94 years old and had been alone for the past four years, since my grandmother passed away. "Grandpa Bucken", as we called him, has been suffering from Alzheimer's Disease for the past couple of years. He had been at Alta Ridge Alzheimer's Care Center for the past month or so. If you ever need to recommend a care center that specializes in Alzheimer's care, this is definitely a place to consider.

This is a street peformer I saw in San Diego, California. He did the whole daring street perfomer gamut- fire eating, bed of nails and sword swallowing. Really cool, in a freakish sort of way.

I took this just for Ryan. He is always interested in the "man-made". It struck me as an interesting statement about our nieghborhood. Back in the day this whole area was once dry farms where this kind of device would have been put to work daily. Now it has been relegated to the task of enhancing a sidewalk parking strip.

The other interesting thing to me is the whole strip was covered in strawberry plants and dandelions. It is unclear as to which will win the battle of permanent resident. I'm sure there is some kind of statement about the nieghborhood here.

Mourning Doves are everywhere around Oquirrh Shadows. You will often hear them cooing in the early morning and evenings. I used a polarizer filter on this shot as an experiment. I've had the thing around for ages and never done anything with it. It seems to keep the sky from washing out in a haze of psuedo blue.

Sometime in 2007 I was driving home from a late night meeting and I smelled smoke in the air. As I neared my house I saw a firetruck parked in front and I feared my electrical outlet replacement from earlier in the evening had gone bad. I quickly discovered my house was safe but the neighbors house was on fire. People from all over the neighborhood were there to witness the event and I was the only guy wearing a business suit.

My 5 year old discovered a box containing Bionicle parts that belong to my 18 year old. We spent several evenings putting creatures together with no instructions sheets. We completed 22 Bionicles and most of them have their actual parts in the proper colors. I took the first picture so I could E-Mail it to my nephew in Chicago. He is a Bionicle fan. Since I am a wanna be amateur photographer I was not pleased with the shot and went for a more dramatic approach. The 2nd picture is the result. Both pictures were shot with available light from a north facing window. The 2nd picture was taken with a tripod.

Steve took a spill near the end of a bike ride with his wife. This photo was taken a little over 48 hours after the accident occured using available light from incandescent bulbs which caused the picture to look yellow. Steve is not normally that color. He is healing quite nicely. His wife took photos the night of the accident and they are quite a bit more graphic. Stop by my house if you wish to see all the pictures including the closeups. Kim said this is what happens when old people act like they are young. If I have misquoted her she can comment with her actual words.

This morning we were making bread. The loaf on the top rack continued to rise to the point that it was pressing against the top of the oven. The pressure broke the baking stone it was baking on.

Suburban Windmill

The people who own this little windmill were in the front yard so I was lurking behind the fence trying to get a good angle without being noticed. It didn't help that my 5 year old son kept running past the fence and making noise.

Edge of the frontier series

The next bunch of photos are what I am calling my "on the edge of the frontier series". When anyone ask where I live an I tell them west of Airport II, I always get the response "oh, you live way out there". As if I can only get here by horse and buggy (yea, right- I wish)!

But since we have an official government sanctioned "prairie parcel" in the neighborhood I guess it counts as wild lands. They say there are Burrowing Owls in the field, but I still as of yet haven't seen them. Oh well, whatever it takes to keep from having every last inch paved. Maybe I should consider getting a milk cow to complete the local ensemble. Perhaps a couple of those mini-beef s you see at the state fair, a goat, some sheep- but I draw the line at chickens. Smelly dumb animals. Someone else will have to do chickens.

The fox you see way out in the field had been behind a bush about three feet away from me when I took the previous picture. As soon as I released the shutter, he made his move. I saw him out of the corner of my eye but he quickly out manuvuered me before a could get a shot off. By the time I got to the dirt road he was way out in the field.

Finally getting around to posting some shots I took with Ryan several months ago. What else am I going to do on a snowy holiday with a gimped up finger?! Most of the next 13 photos were taken with Ryan on a couple "urban safari shoots" we have done.

I was out on photo-safari with Ryan when he screeches the car to a stop and makes a quick U-turn. I didn't notice anything special when we drove by, so I figure Ryan must have smelled the brake lubricant as we passed. Anyway, he ends up talking to this guy for a few minutes which gave me a chance to snap a few shots.
